The Best Christian Books to Teach Your Children the Gospel
When my first was born and especially as she got older I knew I wanted to teach her the gospel and instill it in her at a young age so that it would become her foundation. But, I remember feeling overwhelmed. I kept facing (and still do sometimes) the same question, “How do I make this engaging and understandable to a toddler?”
She’s now 5 and I have three others and the best tool I’ve found to teach your kids the gospel are books! I truly believe that if you aren’t using books to disciple your kids, you’re missing out. Kids bibles, kids theology books, christian story books, biblical concept books, Christian Fiction books. There are SO MANY wonderful books out there. Thankfully, my MIL was a children’s director at a church so she sends me all the best christian books from conferences she goes to (thanks, Robin!) which means I can now share my favorite with you!
This list is not all inclusive but I tried my best to gather as many of my favorites as possible. If you have a favorite not on this list, please share with me! Also, there are more books in each category once you click the link that are not currently pictured below.
These books are a staple in our home. They are a series of “baby believer” books which teaches bible basics while adding counting, colors, shapes, and other earlier years skills in.
2. Theology For Little Hearts Board Books
These books are similar to the above but for older toddlers and kids teaching bible basics.
3. Bibles and Devotionals
We have had a variety of bibles over the years and I’ve linked our favorite when you take into account the way the gospel is presented as well as pictures. The “The Ology” book is such a creative book that we love as well from the perspective of two little kids. The devotionals added are sweet ways to bring up gospel conversation with your kids. I have linked a couple other books that are simple theology concept books for kids like, “Big Thoughts For Little People.”
4. Biblically based fiction books
Here I’ve linked a group of books that we have loved reading over the years. I am picky when it comes to what my children fill their mind with. I appreciate these books because it normalizes the gospel for the child listening in a regular read rather than being a formal “gospel” book.
5. Bible Belles + Bible Heroes
the Bible belles are a series of books created for little girls to learn about other women in the Bible. The author had the revelation that little girls could name off all the Disney princesses but couldn’t name the women of the Bible so she created a brand to teach girls the women of the Bible in a way that they connected to. the Bible Heroes are short, informative books that are usually double sided and VERY affordable.
6. Christmas books + Easter Books
I need to give a special shout out to Davey the Donkey because that book convicts my own heart as I read it to my children. This is a book we read all year round and not just near easter. It’s about a donkey that never gets picked by his master to do anything so he complains then he gets chosen to be the donkey that Jesus rides into Jerusalem on. After that, Daveys master makes him carry common goods and he complains again that he’s too good for those tasks then he realizes that he will do everything to his best ability without complaining emphasizing the scripture about doing all things as to the Lord. It’s truly a great story.
The garden, the curtain, and the cross is also a great year round book.
7. Activity Books
We had had many song books and if one breaks, we go get another of the same one. This group of books are great for independent time or bedtime.
