5 Verses I’ve Prayed Over My Children Since Birth
Before both of my kids were born I asked God to give me scripture to pray over them specifically and both times I felt certain scripture unique to them pressed upon my heart to pray before they were even born. After they were born their personalities and also experiences involving them confirmed the scripture God gave me for them. I’ll share two short examples below then we will get into general verses I've prayed over my kids!
Amara
I’ve never shared this story before so here we go… It was in the middle of the night when I woke up to my six month old (now three year old) screaming crying. This was so far out of the ordinary because she slept through the night since the day she was born. Just to give you an idea of how not normal it was for her to wake up.. I had to put frozen peas on her back just to wake her up to eat in the middle of the night as a newborn and she still slept through it. OK, back to the story. I went in her room and immediately I felt something was wrong, I believe God has gifted me with discernment and I knew I needed to pray over her and her room so I did. After I prayed I felt peace so I went back to sleep. The verse I believe God gave me to pray over her before she was born is this one:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-20
Throughout generations in my family, the women have been given the gift of discernment (you have spiritual gifts too!) I think this gift has been given to Amara as well which is why I think she’s more sensitive to the spiritual realm. I think Amara may have a special anointing to do some tough work for the Lord and I’m not surprised I’ve had a few different experiences like the one I shared above where I’ve had to pray very intentional prayers over her.
Ava
Before Ava was born I felt that God gave me the verse, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9. So I’ve prayed that she would work for peace, her peace never be stolen by the world. That she would not be conformed to the world but transformed by the Word daily. She bring unity among believers. What do you know, since the day she was born she’s been a ball of peace and joy not because of anything I’ve done on my own but because God has invited me in to pray this over her in obedience.
So why do I share the above with you?
Simply this.. prayer is purposeful and powerful. I want you to ask the Holy Spirit what the Lord would have you pray over your children. Whatever you feel He lays on your heart, pray that over them. He knows them better than even you do and knows exactly what they need you to pray over them. Prayer is powerful not necessarily because of who is praying but because of Who we are praying to and the power of the Holy Spirit in us, we can’t get that mixed up. Your prayers are just as effective as the person you think says all the right words and sounds so majestic when they pray. God is listening to you too.
Ok, without further ado.. here are the five verses:
“All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace.” Isaiah 54:13
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
There are other verses I pray over them either situationally, or individually depending on the characteristics of my children!
